FACULTY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Culverhouse Faculty Scholars program matches Culverhouse undergraduate students with faculty in our college who have similar research interests. Students who participate in this program serve as research apprentices to faculty mentors. The experience is tailored to the interests and backgrounds of the students and participating faculty members.

Participants may be tasked with:

  • Assisting with the development of research questions
  • Reviewing the current literature
  • Developing computer programs
  • Collecting and analyzing data
  • Writing papers for publication

The Culverhouse Faculty Scholars program is an ideal way for a student to initiate or continue a working relationship that has been established with a Culverhouse faculty member through the University of Alabama Emerging Scholars Program.

Students selected for the Faculty Scholars program must submit a completed I-9 form as soon as possible after being selected for the program. Students cannot begin working as Faculty Scholars until doing so.

Responsibilities of participating students include:

  • Commit approximately ten (10) hours per week to a research project with a Culverhouse faculty member (your Faculty Mentor).
  • Attend regular meetings with your Faculty Mentor. Weekly or biweekly meetings are suggested at mutually agreed upon times.
  • Attend regular meetings of all Faculty Scholars and Faculty Mentors.
  • Complete in a satisfactory and timely manner work that is acceptable to both you and your Faculty Mentor.
  • Be enrolled in a University of Alabama degree program and be registered for at least 6 credit hours during Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Maintain a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) on coursework attempted at The University of Alabama.
  • Make a conscientious effort to attend and participate in meetings and social functions associated with your appointment as a Faculty Scholar.
  • Present the results of your research at the UA Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference (URCA) and the Culverhouse pre-URCA event in the spring semester.

The Culverhouse Faculty Scholars Program is an ideal way for a faculty member to initiate a working relationship with a top undergraduate student or continue a working relationship that has been established with a student through the University of Alabama Emerging Scholars Program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Scheduling and holding regular meetings with your Faculty Scholar. Weekly or biweekly meetings at mutually agreed upon times are suggested.
  • Working with your Faculty Scholar to develop a plan (including deliverables) that moves your research project forward.
  • Submitting a report of outcomes from the work with your Faculty Scholar to the Associate Dean for Research by May 1 of each year.
  • Working with the Faculty Scholar to create a presentation of her or his Faculty Scholar efforts for the Spring University of Alabama Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) Conference and the Culverhouse pre-URCA event in the spring semester.
  • Ensuring the Faculty Scholar is performing her or his duties in a timely manner and informing the Associate Dean for Research immediately when the Faculty Scholar is not performing her or his duties in a timely manner.

Student Information:

  • If you have a student you would like to work with through the Faculty Scholars Program, we will try to accommodate your wishes. The student must apply for the Faculty Scholars program. If you would like to participate in the Faculty Scholars Program but do not have a student in mind we will try to identify a student applicant for you. In either case, a student who wishes to participate in the Faculty Scholar Program must apply early in the Fall semester of the proposed academic year.
  • Please note that Faculty Scholars should not be used to support instruction/classroom activities.

The Emerging Scholars Program is an exciting opportunity for students at the University of Alabama that helps them get involved in research with a faculty mentor in their chosen field. The mission of the Emerging Scholars Program is to improve and enrich student learning and to nurture student success.
